Simone Bourke – Project Engineer

The civil and infrastructure construction industry revolves around STEM related fields.

  • Analysts and economists advise the government at a higher level where best to invest their money to get the greatest return
  • Environmental scientists (biologists, ecologists, geologists, etc.) conduct early investigations on any potential work sites to feed the designers and architects with eco-friendly design concepts
  • Designers, architects and modellers crunch the numbers, and use computer-aided design (CAD) programs to draft, produce, scale and fine-tune drawings and maps for key infrastructure and construction projects
  • Cost planners put a dollar figure to the design
  • Project Engineers plan, organise and oversee the construction of projects, on time and to budget. Working in offices and on–site providing direction to the skilled and unskilled work force. There are also a number of support roles within the industry which provides the foundation for the rest of us to do our work to the best of our abilities.
  • Coleman Rail – Southern Program Alliance

I am employed by Coleman Rail, a construction contractor specialising in Metro, Freight & Heavy Haulage and Light Rail infrastructure. We are able to undertake the design & construction of almost all of the individual components that collectively make up the fixed rail infrastructure of a rail network. We have particular advantages in multi-disciplinary projects and have specialist expertise in the delivery of projects within live rail environments and constrained sites. Our commitment to maximise the works completed by direct labour and hourly hired resources gives our project management teams complete control of the selection of resources applied to the task and the capacity to redirect resources if and when required.I’m currently working as part of The Southern Program Alliance, an alliance comprising of Lendlease Engineering (recently acquired, and now trading under Acciona Construction Australia), Coleman Rail, WSP and Metro Trains Melbourne to deliver the Southern Program – Level Crossing Removal Program. The Victorian Government’s Level Crossing Removal Project is overseeing the largest rail infrastructure project in the state’s history. It will see the removal of 75 of Melbourne’s most dangerous and congested level crossings by 2025. The project will also see the upgrading or building of more than 27 train stations, laying many kilometres of new track and making associated rail improvements. Removing the level crossings will reduce risk for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists as well as creating new community spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy.
